What Documents Do You Need to Sell Your Car Privately?

When it comes time to sell your car, it’s common to wonder what documents you need to do so. Car Removal Adelaide has put together a guide to help you understand the process.

Sell Your Car

Documents Required For Sell Your Car

Luckily for those in South Australia, the process is rather simple. You simply need to complete the transfer documentation, filled out by both the seller and the buyer.

The transfer paperwork can be found on the back of your car’s registration details certificate. If you lose or damage your vehicle registration certificate, you can go to mySA GOV and download a replacement.

The Transfer Paperwork

It is the responsibility of the seller to provide the disposal notice. The application for the transfer of registration is the responsibility of the buyer – if you don’t intend to transfer the vehicle’s registration, do not sign the transfer papers. If you don’t want to transfer your vehicle’s registration, you must cancel it within seven dales of the sale. Fortunately, this is the only type of documentation needed. Of course, it’s important to provide photo ID to ensure that either the buyer or seller are authentic.

Give the Buyer of Your Car a Receipt

As easy as the process is in South Australia, it puts more responsibility on the buyer and seller to make sure that the process is done properly. For example, the South Australian government registration and licensing system does not hold information about legal ownership of a car. It is recommended that you give the buyer a receipt, as well as keep their details with you as proof that you sold your vehicle and are no longer its owner.

This receipt should include:

  •         Your name, address and signature
  •         The buyer’s name, address and signature
  •         Details about the vehicle, including its make, model, engine number and vehicle identification number (VIN)
  •         Details about the sale of your vehicle such as the date it occurred, and the price paid

You Don’t Need a Roadworthy Vehicle to Sell It

Unlike other states in Australia, South Australian vehicles don’t need to be registered as roadworthy for you to sell it privately, which puts more responsibility on the buyer to ensure that the vehicle is in satisfactory condition.
